Job Description

The Senior Writer is responsible for writing internal and external communications for Whole Food Market’s Executive Team and senior leaders. The writer should have exceptional writing and storytelling skills, with the ability to transform complex ideas into clear, compelling messages that resonate with various audiences. The writer must be able to produce communications materials under tight deadlines, including speeches, newsletters, messaging, scripts, internal stories, and social content. The writer must be able to craft strong prose, write with a point of view, and be creative – while capturing the tone and personality of our executives. 

This seasoned writer will also oversee editorial strategy for the executives’ content and track the efficacy of the communications. The writer should have top-notch editing skills and be able to train and edit other communications professionals. This writer must have previous experience in journalism or book publishing. Passion for food and the grocery industry is a plus. The role will report to the Executive Leader of Corporate Communications.     
   

This role is based in Austin, TX, with an expectation of being in the downtown HQ office five days a week.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for defining and managing an editorial content strategy for our executives. This includes creating editorial guidelines and review processes.  

  • Responsible for writing clear and impactful communications, which includes key messages, speeches, scripts, newsletters, internal stories for the Whole Foods Market Intranet (Innerview) and social content. 

  • Support storytelling projects throughout the business, including the development of written content to go with videos and infographics. 

  • Responsible for researching and interviewing subject matter experts and different suppliers and partners for story ideas.  

  • Manage editorial board meetings with broader communications team to align on content strategy. 

  • Edit communications collateral from various teams and provide feedback that elevates the writing; Train and develop PR professionals to become better writers; serve as in-house writing coach and create best practices and host writing workshops.  

 

Skills: 

  • Experience managing executive-level writing assignments that are high profile and complex in nature

  • Experience writing for a variety of channels and platforms

  • Maintains positive working relationships with executive leaders and supports functional stakeholders; be able to have executive presence and develop trust with executives   

  • Be a nimble and polished writer who will develop and enhance an executive’s voice and communication style 

  • Be a fast learner and adapt to learning new communications skills and different channels and audiences 

  • Self-starter with a get it done attitude who can effectively create goals and track progress  

  • At least 10 years of professional writing or journalism is required.  

  • Strong attention to detail 

 

Education & Experience: 

  • BA/BS degree and 10 years’ relevant experience OR equivalent education and relevant experience 

  • Previous experience working directly with executive or C-suite leaders
